Mount Forest, locally spelled Mount Forist, is a 2,031-foot mountain in Berlin, New Hampshire, and one of the city’s most prominent landscape features. Its silhouette has also led some in Berlin to call it Elephant Mountain. Surrounded by nearby heights and overlooking the city and the Mahoosuc Range from its southeastern viewpoint, it serves as both a landmark and a popular hiking destination, with 25 established routes suited to beginner and intermediate hikers. Its naming reflects local history and usage: the federal standard is Mount Forest, while residents and the city commonly use Mount Forist. Earlier, it was known as Plumer’s Fort before being renamed for Merrill C. Forist.
