Named for Greenland explorer Fridjof Nansen, Berlin's first ski club formed in 1872 and sponsored the Big Nansen, which the National Youth Administration and the City of Berlin constructed in 1936–38. Possibly the tallest steel-tower ski jump in the world at the time, it stood 171 feet high. Clarence "Spike" Oleson made the first jump in 1937, Olympic trials were held there in 1938, and Milan hosted the United States Ski Jumping National Championships four times, in 1940, 1957, 1965, and 1972.
