Mount Jasper in Berlin, New Hampshire, is a rare prehistoric quarry where pre-Contact Native Americans mined bands of rhyolite, a volcanic stone used for tools, as much as 9,000 years ago. Unlike many ancient quarry sites, it preserves evidence of both surface extraction and tunneling into the mountain, including short mine shafts and workshop areas where stone was shaped into items such as weapon points. Archaeological work has shown the scale and organization of this activity, while finds of Mount Jasper stone across the northeastern United States indicate that its material circulated widely. The site is significant as uncommon evidence of early mining technology in the eastern United States.
