The Berlin Mills Railway was an integral part of Brown Company history in Berlin, beginning in the 1870s when a brace of oxen moved railcars around the mill yards. By the 1950s, it had advanced to diesel engines and grown to move nearly 100,000 cars a year carrying pulpwood, coal, paper towels, and other finished products from local mills and businesses. The railway oversaw 14 miles of track, including lines along the Androscoggin River.
