McKenzie Mountain Wilderness Area is a protected, heavily forested part of New York’s Adirondack Park and Forest Preserve west of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. Its character is shaped more by mountains than lakes, with McKenzie Mountain and Moose Mountain as its dominant heights. Though it contains only a few ponds, McKenzie Pond is important to the village of Saranac Lake’s water supply. Spring-fed brooks, including Lincoln Brook and French Brook, drain the slopes and are known as clear trout streams. Hiking is the main recreation, with foot trails, a lean-to, and broad summit views, and public access is relatively good from all sides.
