Esther Mountain, a 4,240-foot Adirondack High Peak in New York’s Wilmington Wild Forest beside Whiteface Mountain, is the northernmost and the 28th-highest of the High Peaks. Its name appeared in print by 1865 and honors Esther McComb, who in 1839, at age 15, made the first recorded ascent of its summit while trying to reach Whiteface from the north. In 1939, the Adirondack Forty-Sixers placed a tablet on the summit to commemorate her climb. Esther remained the only High Peak named for a woman until 2014, when East Dix became Grace Peak. Hikers commonly approach by the Wilmington Trail or by the Marble Mountain Trail connection.
