Athabasca Falls is a powerful waterfall on the upper Athabasca River in Jasper National Park, south of Jasper, Alberta. Though only moderate in height, it stands out for the force and volume of water funneled through a narrow rocky gap. The falls drop 24 metres across a width of 46 metres and are classified as a Class 5 waterfall. Water crossing hard quartzite and eroding softer limestone below has carved a short gorge and rounded potholes in the surrounding rock. Easy access, viewing platforms, nearby bridges, and use as a starting point for rafting trips have made the falls one of the park’s best-known natural attractions.
