Joseph Foster came to the state of Washington from Sheboygan, Wis., arriving at Vancouver, Wash., by ox team on July 1, 1852, reaching Alki Point and Seattle by boat on April 4, 1853, and locating here on May 1, 1853. He served as a governor's scout and packer in the Indian War of 1855 and 1856, was a member of the territorial legislature for eleven sessions, married Miss Martha J. Steele on June 11, 1865, planted this tree on July 4, 1873, and lived here until his death on Jan. 16, 1911.
