Highline Botanical Garden in SeaTac, Washington, grew from the rescue of Elda and Ray Behm's private garden, which faced demolition during planning for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport's third runway. After a 1999 agreement, volunteers began relocating most of the original plants in 2000 to create the garden's first 2 acres. Over time, local horticultural groups added major features including the Paradise Garden, iris and daylily displays, the Celebration Rose Garden, and the Sensory Garden. In 2006, the historic Seike Japanese Garden, originally built in 1961 as a war memorial, was moved here, making the site a product of preservation, volunteer labor, and community gardening.
