Keene’s historic downtown features the Magical History Tour mural series, centered on intersecting people, innovative products, and momentous events that shaped the city. The subjects were chosen by the community and painted in 2019 by a couple hundred volunteer muralists known as the Walldogs, a name that originally referred to specialized artists who traveled to paint large-scale works on billboards and buildings and that is now used by a unique group devoted to old-fashioned mural painting. Gathering each year from around the world, they create public art murals about a place’s history, and in Keene their work became a collective transformation of shared space meant to inspire the people who live, work, and play there. The tour includes murals on Barry Faulkner, Kingsbury Manufacturing, the Ashuelot River, Catharine Fiske, Wyman Tavern and the Minutemen gathering, the Keene Evening Sentinel, the Abenaki, land conservation, Jonathan Daniels, Doctor Albert Johnston, the railroad, baseball, Trinity Bicycle, Clarence DeMar, Jennie B. Powers, and Keene State College, along with other mural locations including an antique Coca-Cola wall, the Jumanji mural, Men of Monadnock, Advent of the Coming of the Railroad, and Central Square.
