West Swanzey Covered Bridge, also known as the Thompson Bridge, is a rare surviving 19th-century covered bridge in New Hampshire and a prominent part of village life in West Swanzey. Built in 1832 by Zadoc Taft for the town, it carries Main Street over the Ashuelot River on a two-span Town lattice truss supported by stone abutments and a central pier. Its roof once sheltered sidewalks on both sides, and traces of separate pedestrian portals remain. After decades of restrictions, closure, and major reconstruction, it retained its historic character. Its significance was affirmed by National Register listing in 1980 and by the town’s refusal in 1930 to sell it to Henry Ford.
