Hargrave Covered Bridge stood west of Portland Mills, Indiana, as a single-span Burr Arch road bridge, a common nineteenth-century timber arch and truss design. Generally attributed to Indiana bridge builder J. J. Daniels and dated to 1847, it is identified through a pre-destruction photograph and a portal style resembling the Jackson Covered Bridge. The bridge was named for A. A. Hargrave, a Rockville newspaper editor who lived past one hundred. It was destroyed in the Great Flood of 1913, which also damaged other nearby bridges, and the crossing was replaced in 1916 by the Harbison Covered Bridge. Its story remains part of Parke County’s covered bridge heritage.
