Mount Lander rises 12,623 feet in Wyoming’s central Wind River Range, within the Wind River Indian Reservation, in a rugged, glaciated alpine landscape. Its most distinctive feature is the Lander Glacier, a complex of three glaciers spread across the mountain’s north and west slopes, with the westernmost the largest. Baptiste Lake lies at the mountain’s southeast base, and nearby Mount Hooker’s celebrated northeast wall places it within a broader setting of granite peaks and cirques. The area is renowned for striking scenery but also for serious backcountry hazards, including wildlife, wildfire, cold, steep terrain, falling rock, and fatal accidents.
