Grapevine Canyon Petroglyphs in southern Nevada, near Laughlin on Spirit Mountain at Christmas Tree Pass, preserve more than 700 recorded rock carvings on about 250 panels, with the greatest concentration near the canyon entrance among rock shelters. Created sometime between about 1100 and 1900 AD, the images form a long record of rock art whose exact meaning and makers remain uncertain, though the surrounding area was inhabited by the Mojave. Part of wilderness lands and partly within Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and has also faced modern vandalism despite preservation efforts.
