Spirit Mountain Wilderness is a 33,518-acre protected desert landscape in the Newberry Mountains of southern Nevada, centered on Spirit Mountain and largely within Lake Mead National Recreation Area and Avi Kwa Ame National Monument. Long visible across the region, the mountain holds deep spiritual importance for Yuman and Mojave people, whose traditions place the beginning of life there and whose descendants remain nearby on the Fort Mojave Indian Reservation. The area also preserves strong evidence of long Native presence, especially at nearby Grapevine Canyon, where ancient petroglyphs appear on basalt rock. Congress designated the wilderness in 2002, and it is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service.
