Spirit Mountain, also known as Avi Kwa Ame, is a peak in southern Nevada near Laughlin within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. At 5,639 feet, it is the highest point in the Newberry Mountains and the Spirit Mountain Wilderness. Its Mojave name means “highest mountain.” Sacred to Native American tribes in southern Nevada, it is regarded as the center of creation for all Yuman-speaking tribes. Reflecting that importance, it was listed as a Traditional Cultural Property on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. In 2023, the surrounding landscape received added protection with creation of the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument west of the peak.
