Colonel John Hargis, who lived from 1802 to 1886, was a Rowan County pioneer, a framer of the 1850 Constitution of the Commonwealth, Morehead's first postmaster, a lawyer, and a storekeeper, and he stepped off the first courthouse square in 1856.
