Ira Allen lived on this site by the Batten Kill, and as Treasurer and Surveyor-General his office helped shape the destiny of the Republic of Vermont. Ethan's family lived here, and here in 1782 he dictated his freethinking Oracles of Reason. He presented the first copy to his bride, his second wife.
