In Kent, Connecticut, this site brings together Eric Sloane’s former art studio, his collection of antique hand tools, and the remains of the town’s nineteenth-century iron industry. The studio became a museum in 1969 when the Stanley Works gave it to the state, creating a home for tools Sloane had assembled over many years. Nearby stands the Kent Iron Furnace above the Housatonic River, where ironmaking began in 1826, the furnace was rebuilt in 1846, enlarged in 1870, and operated until 1892. Together they link Sloane’s interest in early American craft with Kent’s industrial past.
