Akamina-Kishinena Provincial Park protects a narrow stretch of the Rocky Mountains in southeastern British Columbia within the Flathead River watershed, adjoining major protected lands in Alberta and Montana as part of a broader connected mountain landscape. Long before formal protection, Indigenous peoples and wildlife used its passes and trails, including Kootenai travel through South Kootenay Pass for trade and buffalo hunting. Efforts to protect the Flathead watershed began in 1917, and the area became a provincial Recreation Area in 1986 before gaining Class A provincial park status on July 12, 1995. The park is especially important for habitat, including grizzly bears, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and rare plant species.
