Sea Isle's commercial fishermen made vital contributions to their community and to America. Their strength and character helped shape the city despite tremendous difficulty caused by poor economic conditions in the country, and their dedication and hard work arguably saved Sea Isle from economic collapse. They provided much-needed low-cost fish that helped poverty-stricken Americans survive the Great Depression. During World War II, government commandeering of red meat for the armed forces further increased demand for their catch. These fishermen also served honorably in the military, with some making the ultimate sacrifice, and in earning a living many also rescued survivors of U-boat attacks. Their hard work, devotion to family and country, and courage inspired generations of citizens and left a lasting imprint on the city. Paolo Raffa died at sea in 1934, and Camillo Monichetti died at sea in 1930.
