Brandon Kaplan was born on February 9, 1994 to Dina and Michael Kaplan, and it soon became apparent that he had many physical and developmental disabilities. With the love and support of his family, friends, and educators, he embraced his challenges and progressed beyond even the most optimistic expectations of his doctors. His physical challenges made it difficult for him to play in typical playgrounds, but when he was six years old, his parents discovered the Shane's Inspiration playground, where walking on the rubberized surface without falling and accessing the equipment with minimal assistance opened new opportunities for him to play with other children. Brandon's mother brought the idea of a universally accessible playground to the Las Virgenes Special Education P.T.A., and with help from the P.T.A. and interested community members, the idea won the support and assistance of the Calabasas City Council. Through the generosity of many people, the efforts of the City of Calabasas, community organizations, family, and friends, the dream of a universally accessible playground became a reality, creating a place where Brandon and all children, regardless of ability, can play and learn together.
