Meany Lodge, a 54-acre ski area near Stampede Pass in Martin, Washington, began in 1928 when Mountaineers volunteers built the Meany Ski Hut on land donated by Edmond S. Meany. Regarded as Washington’s oldest ski area and among the oldest in the United States, it grew from the Northwest’s early ski-touring culture into a downhill center after the Mach rope tow was added in 1938. Long reached mainly by winter train, it later adapted to changing access and mountain conditions while expanding its facilities. Still volunteer-run, it remains a lodge and snowsports center closely tied to the origins of organized skiing in the Pacific Northwest.
