Moran State Park on Orcas Island in Washington’s San Juan Islands is the largest public recreation area in the island group and the state’s fourth largest park, encompassing more than 5,000 acres of forests, wetlands, bogs, hills, and lakes. It began as the estate of Seattle mayor and shipbuilder Robert Moran, who developed the property between 1906 and 1909 before donating much of it to the state in 1921. The park’s best-known landmark, the stone observation tower on Mount Constitution, was begun in 1935 by Civilian Conservation Corps workers. Its scenery, recreational use, and New Deal-era structures led to its 2013 listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
