Mount Constitution, the highest point on Orcas Island and in the San Juan Islands, rises 2,400 feet within Washington’s Moran State Park and is the second highest mountain on an ocean island in the contiguous United States. Charles Wilkes named it during the Wilkes Expedition of 1838 to 1842 in honor of the USS Constitution. Its most familiar feature is the 52-foot stone observation tower at the summit, designed by Ellsworth Storey and built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936. On clear days, the mountain offers sweeping views across the islands to the Cascade and Olympic ranges and as far as nearby American and Canadian cities.
