Pico Mountain, established in 1937 on Pico Peak in Killington, became one of Vermont’s earliest commercial ski areas and has remained a separate mountain within the Killington region. Its national importance grew in 1940 with the opening of the first T-bar lift in the United States. Founded by the Mead family, it is also associated with Andrea Mead-Lawrence, who later won two Olympic gold medals in alpine skiing. Over the decades Pico expanded with new lifts and summit terrain, growing into a major regional resort. Though later purchased by Killington, it remains physically distinct and holds a long-standing place in Vermont skiing history.
