Killington Ski Resort grew from plans made in 1954 by Perry H. Merrill and Preston Leete Smith, opening in 1958 and expanding rapidly in the 1960s with extensive trail building, beginner-friendly lift access, early snowmaking, and the ticket wicket. Now spread across six interconnected peaks in central Vermont, it is widely regarded as the largest ski resort in the eastern United States, with 155 trails, 21 lifts, the biggest vertical drop in New England, and a famously long season. Killington also became a major competition venue, hosting women’s World Cup races since 2016, and has remained a year-round destination despite storm damage and ownership changes.
