Killington Peak, in south-central Vermont east of Rutland, is the second-highest summit in the Green Mountains and the state. Set on the Long Trail where it coincides with the Appalachian Trail, it is the last nearby peak above 4,000 feet for southbound hikers until Virginia. Known as Pisgah in 1763, the mountain later became central to Vermont’s ski industry through Killington Ski Resort, nicknamed “the beast of the east.” A gondola and summit lodge draw visitors year-round, while the surrounding area’s growth from rough mountain accommodations to a major resort destination reflects the mountain’s broad tourism impact.
