Pico Peak, the northernmost summit of Vermont’s Coolidge Range in the Green Mountains, is a prominent conical mountain above Sherburne Pass and the range’s second-highest peak after Killington. Known on maps since the mid-19th century, its name may come from an Abenaki word for “the pass” or “opening,” or from the Spanish or Portuguese word pico, meaning “peak.” The mountain forms a watershed divide, with streams flowing east toward the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound and west toward Lake Champlain and the Saint Lawrence. In the 20th century it became an important Vermont skiing destination and remained part of the region’s hiking trail network.
