Gifford Woods State Park in Killington, Vermont, occupies the northeastern slope of Pico Peak in the Green Mountains and combines recreation with notable natural and historic significance. Established in 1931 and extensively developed in 1933 and 1934 by Civilian Conservation Corps crews, it grew through later land purchases to 285 acres. The park includes camping, hiking, fishing, Kent Pond access, and a section of the Appalachian Trail. Its preserved old-growth forest is especially important, with part designated a National Natural Landmark in 1980 and another section recognized as a State Natural Area. A CCC-associated portion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
