Cathedral Rock, north of Wanakena in the Adirondacks of northern New York, is known for a preserved fire tower on its summit. The tower began elsewhere, first as a wooden lookout built on nearby Tooley Pond Mountain in 1913 and then as a 47-foot Aermotor LS40 tower installed there in 1919. After fire lookout operations ended following the 1971 season, students from the New York State College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Wanakena removed the structure. Rebuilt on Cathedral Rock during the 1980s and completed in stages through 2000, it gives the mountain significance as both a natural landmark and a surviving part of New York fire-tower history.
