Elephant Peak is a prominent 7,938-foot summit in northwestern Montana’s Cabinet Mountains Wilderness, about 20 miles south of Libby, on the border of Lincoln and Sanders counties. Part of the Rocky Mountains and managed by Kaniksu and Kootenai national forests, it ranks fourth among peaks in the Cabinet Mountains. Its steep rise above nearby Libby Creek and Saint Paul Lake makes its relief especially dramatic. Drainage from its slopes feeds both the Kootenai River and the Clark Fork watershed. Officially named in 1923 for its elephant-like shape, the mountain also stands out for its severe subarctic climate, which preserves a small glacier remnant on its north slope.
