Cabinet Mountains Wilderness is a protected area in Montana preserving the most rugged parts of the Cabinet Mountains within Kootenai and Kaniksu national forests. Given limited protection as a Primitive Area in 1935 and formally established by Congress in 1964, it is known for numerous mountain lakes, steep peaks, and Snowshoe Peak, the range’s highest summit. The area is managed to remain undeveloped, barring motorized and mechanized travel, including bicycles, and containing no roads, buildings, logging, or mining. Under wilderness and forest regulations, camping, fishing with proper permit, and seasonal hunting are allowed.
