Marsh Butte is a 4,721-foot summit in the Grand Canyon of northern Arizona, near Grand Canyon Village, notable for rising more than 2,300 feet above the Colorado River in only half a mile. Its compact profile reveals several major rock layers, with Redwall Limestone above the Tonto Group and Vishnu Basement Rocks at river level in Granite Gorge. Originally named Endymion Dome in 1906 under Clarence Dutton’s mythological naming practice, it was renamed two months later for paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh after a proposal by George Wharton James. First climbed in 1977, it remains a vivid example of the canyon’s dramatic landforms and evolving place names.
