Devil's Courthouse is a bare rock mountain profile with a sinister appearance and a reputation shaped by legend. Its "devilish" look has inspired many folk tales, including a story that a cave within the mountain is where the devil holds court. In Cherokee lore, that cave is the private dancing chamber and dwelling place of the slant-eyed giant, Judaculla. Despite its name and reputation, Devil's Courthouse also supports rare and delicate high-altitude plants, including the Rock Gnome Lichen and the Spreading Avens, some of them possibly remnants from the last glacial period. From the summit, the panoramic view includes North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee.
