Tanasee Bald, also known as Tennessee Bald, is a 5,561-foot mountain in western North Carolina near the Blue Ridge Parkway on the border of Haywood and Transylvania counties. Part of the Great Balsam Mountains within the Blue Ridge and broader Appalachian chain, it holds ecological importance as the southern breeding limit of the northern saw-whet owl, a species usually associated with Canada’s boreal forests. The mountain also carries cultural meaning in Cherokee folklore through its association with Jutaculla, or Judaculla, known in Cherokee as Tsul'kălû', a slant-eyed giant said to live on its summit. Tanasee Bald stands as both a natural landmark and a place of enduring regional tradition.
