Sugarloaf Mountain is a 1,348-foot mountain in Rowan County, Kentucky, near Morehead. Though only a local summit, it became briefly famous in January 1904 when reports claimed it was erupting. Accounts told of smoke, deep rumbling, and tree damage, alarming nearby residents enough to prepare to evacuate. A later report in The Bee of Earlington offered a far less dramatic explanation: the smoke came from an illicit moonshining operation on the mountain. The still was said to have been shut down a few weeks later. The mountain is chiefly remembered for this short-lived eruption scare.
