Mount Stewart is a peak on the Great Western Divide in Sequoia National Park, in a rugged high Sierra setting near Kaweah Gap and the High Sierra Trail, with Lilliput Glacier on its northern flank. The mountain was named for George W. Stewart, editor of the Visalia Delta and an important advocate for protecting the giant sequoias once widely called the Big Trees. Francis P. Farquhar later called Stewart “the father” of Sequoia National Park, tying the peak to the early movement that helped win federal protection for this landscape. Its alpine climate, shaped by Pacific storms rising over the Sierra crest, brings rain, snow, ice, and harsh granite terrain.
