Angel Wings is a 10,401-foot summit in California’s Sierra Nevada, above Hamilton Lakes on the west side of the Great Western Divide in Sequoia National Park. Its steep alpine setting and especially its abrupt rise of about 2,400 feet in half a mile give it unusual prominence. The mountain’s south face, the largest rock wall in Sequoia National Park, made it an important destination for climbers. Beginning with first ascents of the South Face in 1967 and the South Arête in 1971, climbers established major routes there over subsequent decades. It became one of the southern Sierra’s best-known big-wall climbs, though its name remains unofficial.
