Lilliput Glacier
Nature
Lilliput Glacier, on Mount Stewart in California’s Sierra Nevada, is notable as the smallest named glacier in the range and the southernmost named glacier in the United States. Covering about 0.05 square kilometres, or roughly 12.2 acres, it survives on a shaded, north-facing vertical cliff. That sheltered setting allows ice to persist despite the glacier’s exceptionally small size, making it a striking example of how local conditions can preserve glacier ice far south of the country’s larger ice fields.
