Brigham Young, the leader of the Mormon pioneers, was born up the steep hill to the south on June 1, 1801. He eventually led his people from Illinois to Utah, where he founded Salt Lake City in 1847 and 500 communities throughout the West. Young became the first territorial governor of Utah and the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
