George D. Aiken Wilderness is a protected wilderness area in Vermont and one of eight within the Green Mountain National Forest. Established by the Vermont Wilderness Act of 1984, it covers 4,800 acres and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The area was named for former Vermont U.S. senator George Aiken, who lived from 1892 to 1984. Its name recognizes his advocacy for the Eastern Wilderness Areas Act of 1975 and connects this Vermont landscape to the wider growth of wilderness protection across the eastern United States.
