Nature
Haystack Mountain is a 3,445-foot peak in Wilmington, Vermont, whose sharp summit cone, broad views, and shared ridgeline with Mount Snow make it a prominent feature of the southern Green Mountains. Long regarded as a rugged and imposing landform, it is reached by hiking trails from the Chimney Hill area and past Haystack Pond toward Mount Snow. Just below the summit, Haystack Pond and nearby Crystal Pond drain through Binny Brook to Harriman Reservoir. Haystack Pond’s acidic water has long prevented aquatic life, worsened during the twentieth century with acid rain, and later recovered. While ski, housing, and golf development occupy its flanks, most of the mountain remains protected within the Green Mountain National Forest.
