Seven Sailors is a sandstone rock pillar in Utah’s Valley of the Gods, west of Bluff, rising about 400 feet above the surrounding terrain and standing on Bureau of Land Management land near Valley of the Gods Road. Its runoff drains toward the San Juan River through Lime Creek. The formation consists of two layers of the Cutler Formation: the lower Halgaito Formation and the upper Cedar Mesa Sandstone, deposited roughly 270 to 300 million years ago in the early Permian. Erosion wore away the softer lower layers more quickly than the harder caprock, creating the isolated butte-like pillar seen today in this cold semi-arid desert landscape.
