Battleship Rock is a 5,422-foot butte in southeastern Utah’s Valley of the Gods, west of Bluff, where it rises nearly 600 feet above the valley floor within a quarter mile. Its sharp profile comes from the contrasting erosion of rock layers in the Cutler Formation, with the Halgaito Formation below and Cedar Mesa Sandstone above. That upper sandstone preserves coastal dune deposits from roughly 270 to 300 million years ago in the early Permian, while the valley floor is formed by the Honaker Trail Formation. In this cold semi-arid desert, with under 10 inches of annual precipitation, the butte’s exposed strata and abrupt form help define the valley’s landscape.
