John Gilmore entered the first land in the township in 1826. Alanson Savage built a steam saw mill in 1840 that produced timbers for the Plank Road. Rev. Jones organized a Methodist Church in 1852. Early families included the Furrs, Booes, and Glasscocks. The township had four schools: a log school in 1848, a frame school in 1864, a brick school in 1875, and a three room brick school from 1900 to 1932.
