Powell Peak is a 13,176-foot mountain in Grand County, Colorado, and one of the state’s higher summits, ranked 493rd. It was named for John Wesley Powell, with the name officially adopted in 1961 by the United States Board on Geographic Names. Runoff from its east slope flows into Glacier Creek, a tributary of the Big Thompson River, while its west side drains toward Grand Lake through North Inlet. At this high elevation, the mountain has an alpine subarctic climate, marked by cold, snowy winters, cool to warm summers, year-round precipitation, summer thunderstorms, and a drier period in late spring.
