Portland Mills was once the center of a thriving rural town on the Parke and Putnam County line at the corner of four townships. Settled in the early 1800s, it included a Christian church established in 1838 and later relocated in 1959, and a water-powered mill built in 1822 and destroyed by fire in 1960.
