Great Eddy Covered Bridge in Waitsfield, Vermont, is a rare covered bridge that stands at the center of village life rather than on a remote road. Built in 1833, it is one of Vermont’s oldest covered bridges and the state’s longest single-span Burr truss bridge, measuring 105 feet. Its design includes laminated arches, later reinforced with laminated stringers, and a metal roof with an exterior walkway added in 1940. Repaired many times because it remained in regular use, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The bridge survived severe flooding during Hurricane Irene in 2011 and remains one of Vermont’s best-known 19th-century bridges.
