Stark Mountain, also known as General Stark Mountain, is a summit in Vermont’s Green Mountains in Fayston, rising to 3,662 feet with the Long Trail crossing near its summit north of Mount Ellen. Named for General John Stark, hero of the 1777 Battle of Bennington, it reflects the area’s Revolutionary War associations, echoed by the nearby Jerusalem Trail in Starksboro. The mountain lies in the Lake Champlain watershed, with drainage from both sides eventually reaching the Winooski River and Lake Champlain. Its north peak holds Stark’s Nest, a warming hut used by skiers in winter and hikers in summer.
